On Australia Day we come together as a nation to celebrate what's great about Australia. It's the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It's the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future.

Australia Day, 26thJanuary, is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships from Great Britain, and the raising of the Union Jack at Sydney Cove by its commander Captain Arthur Phillip, in 1788.

Though 26th January marks this specific event, today Australia Day celebrations reflect contemporary Australia; our diverse society and landscape, our remarkable achievements and our bright future. It is also an opportunity to reflect on our nation's history, and to consider how we can make Australia an even better place in the future.

On Australia Day, over half of the nation's population of 22 million attend either an organised community event, or get together with family and friends with the intention of celebrating our national day. Many more spend the public holiday relaxing with family and friends.

Yet Australia day is much more than barbeques and fireworks. It is more than another public holiday. It is more than the pride and excitement of new citizens who call themselves Australian for the first time on the 26th January after being conferred citizenship.

All its core, Australia Day is a day driven by communities, and the celebrations held in each town, suburb or city - unified by the celebration of what's great about Australia and being Australian - are the foundation of its ongoing success.

Fringe residents fight Adelaide growth

Fight Supported by One Nation

(9th November 2009 :7pm TV News SA)

People living in the Adelaide hills say they are being ignored by the South Australian Government over a 30-year plan for greater Adelaide.

They say their towns are struggling to cope with a growing population and there will not be enough infrastructure or water to sustain future growth.

(Pictured at left on far right Mathew Keizer with the One Nation sign joined the march along with a group of One Nation supporters)

People from Mount Barker and nearby towns marched to the town hall on Sunday demanding the government listen to their concerns over its 30-year plan.

Mt Barker's landscape is already changing rapidly and locals fear even more open areas will be lost.

"We think that it's crazy when you cover one of the best rainfall, most reliable rainfall areas in the state with bitumen and houses," said Mount Barker resident Brian Haddy.

The plan assumes Adelaide's population will rise by more than 500,000 people in the next three decades and that 30 per cent of those will live on the urban fringes.

Mt Barker's population of 13,000 is forecast to triple and Gawler to the north is facing an even bigger rise.

"Currently our population in the area is 60,000 people. They want to push it up to 200,000 people," said Gawler resident Paul Koch.

Some are predicting dire consequences for agriculture.

Attractive to leave

Carol Vincent of the Farmers Federation says locals may decide to leave.

"For many many farmers especially in these high prime areas like the Adelaide hills, Gawler-Barossa area, selling their land is going to be more profitable than farming the land," she said.

People at the weekend rally said their towns were already needing more infrastructure and would not be able to cope with an increase in population.

The following comments have been made by Mathew Keizer who participated in the protest rally.

"It certainly took them by surprise and we were not welcomed by some. In fact Colin and myself were both asked to leave twice by the organiser of the rally. I told him that we have a right to be here as much as any one else. We stood our ground and many people were happy to see One Nation supporting the rally. We even faced abuse by some of the ‘lefty’ groups. This rally and debate was open to everyone and that included One Nation."

"On the back of the One Nation placard was a poster that read ‘Australia is full!’ This really hit home and got many people talking. I personally believe we are ‘chocker block full’. Adelaide and especially the entire surrounding Adelaide Hills which is so unique and precious in so many ways as its Adelaide’s Food Bowl with its reliable high rainfall and fertile soil. It should be protected for its food source and its wildlife, flora and fauna. I’m saying Adelaide and in fact Australia should never be designed to accommodate a large populous growth that our government is forcing upon us."

"I disagree with the Planning Minister’s comments, "if we plan properly rather than just let Adelaide grow randomly, we’re more likely to get the best use of our infrastructure" So what he is saying "We are still going ahead with the population increase and our immigration policy". "We just have to do it properly"

"We are developed! Adelaide’s developed! Australia’s developed! Mount Barker has now 12,000 plus residents. How much development do we need.

We are told a bigger population is good for our economy. Well then what about bringing back our manufacturing, reclaiming back our assets , our water, electricity and the list goes on. We need to curb our immigration policy

Hon Ann Bressington MLC Guest Speaker at One Nation AGM

The Annual General Meeting of One Nation (SA Division) was held on Sunday the 11th October 2009.

Vice President Doug Giddings opened the meeting. State President, Stan Batten announced the result of the election of the executive. Stan Batten, State President; Doug Giddings, State Vice President; Matthew Busbridge, State Secretary and Joyce Hille, State Treasurer.

The meeting was attended by nearly 60 members and supporters of One Nation.

The Hon Ann Bressington in her address spoke at length on some of her many concerns relating to child protection in this state. In her address she made mention of the Bill presently before Parliament, the Consent to Medical Treatment and Palliative Care (Voluntary Euthanasia) Amendment Bill. She said "I will not be voting for this Bill, because I have no faith in government sticking to the rules"

Voluntary euthanasia bill defeated in SA Parliament

JOANNA VAUGHAN ADELAIDE NOW REPORTER, November 18, 2009 09:15am

PROPOSED legislation to allow voluntary euthanasia in South Australia was narrowly defeated in State Parliament early this morning.

The bill, introduced by Greens MLC Mark Parnell, was defeated by 11 votes to 9, with Independent MLC Ann Bressington abstaining.

While anti-euthanasia advocates have hailed the outcome as a win for common sense, Mr Parnell said it was a big disappointment for those in the community who had been striving for the law reform over many years.

"To have the Bill voted down is such a big disappointment, especially for all those in the community who have been striving for this law reform over many years," he said.

"Yet, to come so close is a sure sign that one day, very soon, the South Australian Parliament will pass death with dignity laws.

"This is by no means the last time this issue will come before the Upper House. I intend to work with other supporters of VE to have another try next year after the March 2010 election.

"The vast majority of South Australians want Voluntary Euthanasia law reform. I strongly believe its just a matter of time before compassionate legislation is passed in our state."

Mr Parnell said he would reintroduce the bill after the State election in March next year.

State Secretary of the Australian Family Association Damian Wyld said common sense had prevailed.

"Heavens knows where we could have ended up with such a scheme," he said.

"The failed bill was a shocker.

Family First MLC Dennis Hood who voted against the bill said it was poorly drafted and had many serious defects.

"I am grateful that members listened to my concerns and made the decision on conscience to oppose the bill," he said.

"I have revealed a number of loopholes in the bill including that it would have allowed dentists to perform euthanasia, allowed euthanasia to be performed on patients without a terminal illness and allowed people to take out life insurance policies shortly before undergoing euthanasia."

"Experts say greatest threat to the world is food production on land and in the water.

(From ABC on line 25/10/2009)

" A food production expert says Australia may face a massive famine if governments fail to address an impending global food shortage. A conference of food productivity experts in Sydney this week heard the greatest threat to the world is not climate change, but food production on land and in the water. Science communicator Julian Cribb, an adjunct professor at the University of Technology Sydney, made a keynote address at the seminar saying there is expected to be about 9.2 billion people in the world in 2050, barring wars or major accidents. But Professor Cribb says that population will create an alarming problem - there simply will not be enough food to go round. "Basically what the world has not noticed is that hunger has been sneaking up on us for quite a while," he told ABC News Online. "Population is growing and demand for food is rising. "Governments have had it so good for so long - the world has had plenty of food - they have become complacent and ignorant. "Climate change is going to get worse and worse, but the food problems are going to be in the next two to three decades. "I'm warning now because it takes about a generation to develop new technologies and get them out broadscale. We need to take action now about these things. "Treasury head Ken Henry this week said that Australia's population growth is the biggest challenge to Commonwealth and state governments since Federation. Professor Cribb agrees it will cause problems, and says governments must not forget future famine goes hand in hand with population growth. "They have grossly underestimated the potential for population growth in Australia," he said. "If you get a major collapse in food supply in an area like the north China plains or the Indo-Gangetic plains, there will be hundreds of millions of refugees cut lose so we could easily see 20 or 30 million refugees arrive in Australia over a couple of years ."That's going to completely alter any plans we might have for a managed population growth. "This is quite a dangerous situation. We may be OK for food, but if others are not, we will cop the backwash. "He says a range of issues have sparked current food production problems. "Apart from the obvious things going on in the world food markets, there's a colossal shortage of water emerging because cities worldwide are pinching the farmers' water," he said. "There's land degradation that's proceeded unabated for about 30 or 40 years now. We're losing land at the rate of 1 per cent of the world's farmland every year. "We're running into energy shortages, we're running into shortages of fertilisers, and on top of that you've got climate change. All of these things are making the agricultural environment much less certain. "Professor Cribb says governments should be doing a range of things now to fix the problem. "They need to focus on recycling water and nutrients, putting more science into agriculture to get farmers better technology, stopping cities from stealing farmers' land and water, paying farmers a better price so that they don't destroy the environment that produces the food and opening up free trade in agriculture," he said. "We really need to get on to this. Australia is as much to blame as any other country for neglecting its agricultural science. Let's face it, this is what keeps the people fed. "So if you neglect that, you neglect the first and most important thing for any country".

MP's VOTE TO SAVE THEIR OWN HOUSE

(From 'The Advertiser' 16/10/2009)

Upper House MP's have over-whelmingly rejected an attempt to cut their numbers and the length of their terms. Liberal, Independent, and Family First MPs banded together yesterday to reject a Government Bill aimed at holding a referendum on their future at next year's election.

Only the chamber's seven Labor MPs voted for the move. The Government had proposed a referendum at the March 2010 election which would have asked voters to approve reducing the number of Upper House MPs from 22 to 16 and reducing their terms from eight years to four. It had originally intended offering an option of total abolition of the chamber but this was dropped when the Government realised it was not going to get any support from voters.

Attorney-General Michael Atkinson accused the Upper House of voting to save itself. "Those who voted against this Bill thought about their own necks well ahead of the public interest," he said. "Labor wanted to give the people of SA the chance to vote at a referendum about four year terms, a mechanism to break voting deadlocks and reducing the number of MP's".

"The Government could not call a referendum on the issue without the passing of the Bills." "This meant that for reform to occur, the Legislative Council had to vote to reform itself."

Opposition Leader in the Upper House David Ridgeway said the Liberals had opposed the move right from the outset, saying it was flawed. "It was always going to diminish representation and was an attack on democracy," he said."We had been promised several years to examine this proposal and it has been rushed in at the end of this session".

Greens MP Mark Parnell used the defeat of what he said was a poorly conceived referendum Bill to call for genuine democratic reform of both House. "Without protections like an independent crime and corruption commission, the Upper House plays a critical role in keeping the power of the Government in check," he said.

An 'Advertiser' poll in 2005 found only 16 per cent of voters favoured abolition. Almost two-thirds wanted reduced terms and numbers of MLCs.

SUCCESSFUL FORUM : LARGE ATTENDANCE

The Forum held on the 21st June 2009 was an outstanding success with a record attendance of over 60 people. The meeting was chaired and opened by Doug Giddings (State Vice President) who introduced the guest speaker, the Honorable John Darley MLC. John Darley was elected to the Legislative Council on the 21st November 2007. The Hon John Darley's great grandparents emigrated to Australia from England in the mid 1800's and several generations of the family farmed land in the Crystal Brook area (Mid North of South Australia). John was born at Clare in 1939 and with the outbreak of the second world war moved to St Leonard's (now known as Glenelg North). After attending St Leonard's Primary School he attended the Adelaide Technical High School and his first job was a Junior Draftsman with the E & W S Dept. He worked on such projects as the Mannum to Adelaide pipe line, South Para Reservoir and the Myponga Dam.

In 1960 John had the opportunity to join the chief assessor's Branch of the E & W S Dept where he studied and qualified for admission as an associate of the Commonwealth Institute of Valuers. John went on to hold a number of senior positions on various government boards. He is keenly interested in several important projects currently under discussion in South Australia.

These include:

1) Plans for the desalination plant at Port Stanvac.

2) Plans to double the size of Mt Bold Reservoir.

3) Storm Water retention plans.

4) Improving housing affordability in South Australia.

The Hon John Darley works closely with Senator Nick Xenaphon on a range of issues which directly affect South Australians. In recent times John has formed the Land Tax Reform Association and as its Chairman is working to persuade the Government to introduce a fairer system of Land Tax.

John in addressing the meeting said Land Tax goes back as far to the reign of King William and Queen Mary. The Land Tax Act which was passed in 1692 directed that persons named there in should be commissioners for executing the act. In 1936 Land Tax was transferred to the State Government. Site value is land devoid of improvements. Before 1990 Land Tax was not an issue. The Dunstan State Government removed Land Tax from Primary Producers. Land Tax revenue goes into General Revenue.

In 2005 strong opposition was mounted against Land Tax under the Rann Government. In the June 2009 State Budget no relief for Land Tax was given, but instead will increase by 116% in this financial year.

In 2005 Senator Nick Xenaphon became involved and set up a commission to look at all Land Tax, arguing for ¼ payments to make it easier for people. This proposal was not accepted. Some land owners are paying more Land Tax than their income. The Hon John Darley said objections should be lodged to the Department Valuer General. He said Land Tax is totally out of control in this State. He also stated that land costs more in South Australia than in any other State. Land Tax does not apply in the Northern Territory. He said everything in South Australia has a component of Land Tax added into it.

Many questions on the topic were answered by John.

SAVING THE LOWER LAKES : A LOCAL PERSPECTIVE

Annelie Daly, One Nation Member in Canberra at the Floriade on the 30th September 2009 wearing her T-Shirt advertising the plight of the tortoise of the Lower Lakes.

The slogan on the front says Hurry - Hurry -Hurry' Save the Murray and the Turtles. She wore this on most of our outings where there were large gatherings of people and it attracted lots of questions from interested people. Because Annelie has been very involved with the group at Milang in the plight of saving the tortoise she was able to answer the questions posed to her, she also gave a very interesting speech to the 47 people on the coach on our return trip home, some gave her donations to pass on to the people involved at the MOSH (Milang Old School House) where the tortoise are housed before they are eventually released. Many thousands have died because of the salinity and lack of water in the Lakes, they are heavily infested with Tube Worms which form on their shell and render them too heavy to walk and search for food, the poor things eventually die of starvation, they are being rescued as they are found and taken to the MOSH house at Milang where they are cleaned by the school children and also parents from the area and nursed in fresh water until they are able to be released further upstream in the Murray.

*******************************************************

One of our members just recently visited Clayton, near Milang to attend the 'fresh water wake'. The report given is very interesting and is quoted as follows : 'I have just returned with my family from a visit to Clayton, near Milang where a 'fresh water wake' was held regarding the retention weir they are building there, about 250 people met to take part in it and held a small ceremony in protest of the building of the wall and the blocking of the water way, which is now half way across the channel.

When finished the water will no longer flow through to the Murray Mouth, a very sad and deplorable situation, I only wish there had been 2,000 people there to support it.

Thousands and thousands of tonnes of soil are being carted in to do the walls and the cost would 'beggar belief', one person quoted "hundreds and hundreds of thousands of  millions of dollars!!! All the money that these 'donkey's' have wasted on all the water issues would have been better spent on bringing water from the north of the nation and putting it into the Murray River further up stream. I am sure it would not have blown out to the amount that has been wasted doing all the stupid things the Rann Government has wasted it on to date. (We only saw one wall at Clayton, as the other two are 'out of reach' to the public) there are three being built down here at present. Plus the weir to be put at Wellington, plus the one they have already had built at Narrung.

It was one of the saddest things to see all this soil being dumped into the channel for what they are saying is a 'temporary' retention wall, the thing is some 40 meters wide and I would say by the height of it about the same depth, plus what is under the water level. Certainly not anything 'temporary' in my opinion, more like permanent, all for the sake of a few elite people with large fancy boats at Goolwa who's desire it is to have ONLY fresh water to sail their boats in.

Oh how money (when you have plenty of it) can do what ever you want!! A very, very sad sight to see indeed and the ruination of what was once a beautiful pristine fresh water lake and estuary.

SHAME SHAME SHAME TO THE WHOLE RANN GOVERNMENT.

Some of the signs the groups had made were amazing, I wish I had taken a few photos of them, one sign read, 'Rann's outlaw Lakie Gangs!!!'

I am so fed up with it all, just does not make any sense at all, especially when we have all grown up with this fresh water area all our lives. I feel so sad for all the former producers that have just walked off their land because of this shocking situation.

O'Farrell's big plan : Let voters sack governments any time.

13th March 2009 Kelly Fedor : It's about giving power back to voters : O'Farrell.

A radical proposal allowing voters to oust the Government early is being put forward by the opposition. NSW Liberal Leader Barry O'Farrell says he wants the Governor to be given the power to sack the Government, if voters believe it's under-performing. Mr O'Farrell has told 2GB's Alan Jones the recall provision is already used in parts of the US and Canada.

"A recall position enables the public, the people that ultimately elect governments, to decide at any time during the term, if they're so motivated, to force another election". "We've got enormous frustration across the community at the moment, frustration relating to incompetence, to corruption, to laziness in some instances".

"There is no mechanism in the four year terms". He said Labor has been abusing the state's constitution, which protects fixed four year term, to serve their own election prospects rather than the people of NSW". "What we've seen Labor do is perfect the system of only working in the last year, the year before the election and not putting in a full four year effort".

Note : One Nation has long supported CIR which would allow for 'recall' to be forced by the people through a referendum call upon the Governor.

OPINION : CAN WE RISE ABOVE THE ASHES?

ONE NATION MOURNS BUSH FIRE DEAD

The open forum held at Camden on Sunday 22nd February was attended by over 50 One Nation supporters. Doug Giddings, State Vice President (pictured left) in opening the meeting said that today was the National Day of Mourning to remember those that perished in the horrific fires in Victoria on the 7th February. Doug Giddings said it "was a devastating disaster that has effected many people" and asked those at the forum to stand for a minutes silence to remember those that perished.

An apology has been received from the Hon Peter Lewis (pictured right) who was unable to attend as guest speaker as previously arranged. The Hon Peter Lewis was unable to return from overseas on his scheduled flight due to extreme heavy rains. Eric Cummins, current Chairman of the S.A. Monarchist League was guest speaker and was introduced by State President, Stan Batten. The guest speaker's address was on 'right thinking' and logic, as applied to government decision making and how 'right thinking' is a phrase largely unheard of in today's society. As an example of wrong and illogical thinking on a grand scale, the guest speaker described some of the key measures planned by the Federal Government in its carbon pollution reduction program, to start next year.

The basis of this program is that industry that uses electricity or fossil fuels be fined for their carbon pollution of the atmosphere. These fines are referred to as emission trading, which means industry pays for the pollution it emits. At the same time, industries that can't help causing heavy pollution, because of what they do are not fined but given licences to pollute free of charge, or without a fine.

The industries that will be fined are expected to pass on this extra business cost to the public, which means increasing the cost of living. The guest speaker said the carbon pollution reduction program seemed to have no effect on reducing pollution and was therefore illogical, apart from the additional cost burdens that it created. Another example of wrong thinking was a decision some years ago by government that medical practitioners be banned from advising parents of any condition in a child aged 14 or over, regardless of how serious it was.

Eric Cummin's address was well received by the audience and attracted many questions. Basil Hille, State Director moved a vote of thanks and made a small presentation to Eric.

Stan Batten (pictured right) informed those at the meeting a number of positive highlights of One Nation in South Australia. He said he has been State President since June 2004 and is proud to belong to an executive of eleven members that are 'professional' and 'work as a team'. He said "we are the party of the future, we focus on issues, we focus on the improvement to our nation, we are not like our opponents who spend so much time on internal party bickering. We are above all this and I am indeed very proud of this fact. We don't have important positions in our party, ours is team work recognising your skills and talent which we value and these are put together to guide us into the future".

"You will recall that the late Sir Winston Churchill was a man whose hour came during the great Battle of Britain. He was a man who knew more about defeat than victory; who had been out more than he had been in; who had been down more than he'd been up; who had been accepted only on an occasional basis; who was picked for his character to lead that great nation from the depths of despair to victory. You will recall Churchill said 'Never give in, never give in; never, never, never - in nothing great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense"

These are the very things that this party is made of. No other minor party has had such an influence on major party policy as can be shown by the adoption of many of One Nation initiatives which have been upheld by former Prime Minister John Howard, and has been reported by mainstream journalists.

Our conscience, determination and a strong sense of responsibility are the things that will guide One Nation to eventual victory. I ask you to yield to those compulsions"

The meeting was open for questions and discussion. A raffle was conducted and was drawn by Eric Cummins. An enjoyable afternoon tea concluded a highly successful day.

WHAT AUSTRALIA FACES

At present we now face a number of sharp challenges that have arisen due to a declining political situation:

  • Global Warming : The fuss over climate change has led to the immediate signing of the Kyoto Protocol, an agreement that further erodes our sovereignty. We risk being taxed on our own carbon emissions.

  • Free Trade : Without tariff protection, our primary industries are annihilated by countries adopting slave labour. We have been forced to become a service industry in the global order.

  • Immigration : Immigration has reached its highest levels ever, leaving the country faced with thousands who are simply incompatible with Australian society and culture.

  • Water - Fuel - Power : We are facing unprecedented resource shortages due to the incompetency of the Coalition and ALP. We need new solutions to compete with the modern age.

  • Reconciliation : Rudd's apology over the vastly exaggerated "Stolen Generation" leaves Australians at the mercy of compensation claims. There will be increasing moves for Aboriginal land rights claim.

  • The UN : UN membership is at odds with Australian sovereignty. This organisation desires a world government equipped with a powerful military to control all nations.

  • A Republic : There are pushes for an Australian republic. This will obviously destroy our constitutional monarchist system of government and open an avenue for power hungry politicians.WHAT ONE NATION INTENDS TO DO

  • Industry Protection : One Nation would takes steps to reverse the current devastation by protecting primary producers and strategic manufacturers from unfair free trade agreements.

  • Aboriginal Affairs : One Nation would repeal the Native Title legislation and ensure that funds are properly utilised in improving health and education for all Aboriginal people.

  • Law and Order : One Nation would take steps to strongly support the traditional family. It would also impose strict laws and harsh punishment in fighting those who deliberately aim to corrode the family unit.

  • Immigration : One Nation would urgently review immigration laws to take into account : (a) employment requirements, (b) environmental concerns, (c) social integration.

  • Foreign Ownership : One Nation would restrict foreign ownership of Australian assets. It would also cease the continuing sale of public utilities and assets.

  • Skilled Workforce : One Nation would address the shortages in the skilled workforce by establishing technical colleges and training Australian workers before importing overseas labour.

  • Energy : One Nation would control our energy resources and encourage true renewable energy use. We would also seek to reduce liquid fuel prices to a reasonable cost.

  • Taxation : One Nation would immediately review the burdening GST system. It believes in taxation systems that encourage personal and business advancement with sufficient revenue for public service initiatives.

Capital Punishment In Australia

Australia, in common with all Western countries (excluding the United States) officially abolished capital punishment nationwide in 1985. The Death Penalty Abolition Act was passed in 1973 and came into power on the day of its Royal Assention. The date of assent was September 18, 1973. The Abolition Act states - "a person is not liable to the punishment of death for any offence".

Since abolition, the sentence of life imprisonment - in some states 'penal servitude for life', 'strict security life imprisonment', 'for the term of his natural life', or 'life without parole' - has become the most severe sanction authorised by Australian law.
